Experience
Part-time employment --> Accounting Lab Instructor

Organization/Context: Memorial University

Reflection - The School of Business at Memorial University hires senior students to instruct support labs for students struggling with various subject areas. The highest subscription for the Friday afternoon labs are in the area of accounting and I was one of about 10 senior students who were called on to deliver first-level accounting. As my accounting prof noted, as the level of my teaching became known more broadly among those attending the classes, the size of my Friday tutorial increased while the other tutors lost numbers. Eventually, due to the popularity of my class, I started to break the class into groups and began teaching only about a quarter to about a third of the time and then letting the students work through problems in groups. That way I only had to manage a few groups instead of a large number of students.

This experience and the obvious strength I brought to the tutor role, resulted in Associate Dean, Gary Gorman, recommending me to teach Marketing as an adjunct instructor at Cabot College. This was one of my earliest opportunities to really teach in a classroom and was one of the major influences that changed my path from Bachelor of Commerce to Bachelor of Education at MUN.
