Experience
Volunteer Activities --> Chair - Community Recreation Board

Organization/Context: Lake & Shore Community Recreation

Reflection - In 2010, I was asked by the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) to join a volunteer board who would oversee the launch and start-up operations of Porters Lake's new recreation centre. Within the first two months of the board's formation, I was asked to lead the board as its inaugural chair. The first two years are critical to any organization's success and I am proud to have led a team of talented and dedicated citizens to meet all the goals set by HRM well within budget and the timelines set.

Although we did have some early turnover, everyone on the team worked hard and in true collaborative fashion to meet the Board's goals and to deliver an amazingly effective Municipally-Owned-Volunteer-Operated (MOVO) community recreation service. My own proudest accomplishments are in leading and growing this initial board, keeping it focused on the very challenging task of opening on time in September 2011, and then taking the board through its first two Annual General Meetings and its first strategic planning initiative.

This was a tremendous learning and personal development opportunity to me and I am amazed at how much one has to learn and manage in a position like this. Have a look at both the learning and accomplishments I record for this role and experience.
