Experience
Course Development --> Virtual Water Cooler- Founder

Organization/Context: NSCC

Reflection - For several years I struggled to find an appropriate forum to bring together a group in a social learning setting to study and discuss educational technologies. In 2006, I had the plan ready to launch when working with faculty colleague David Jellicoe, we designed a series of sessions we called Ed Tech Cafe. Unfortunately we made the mistake of trying to connect and articulate it with formal training in the college's CCEDP program and it fell off the rails bogged down in beuraucratic logistics.

In 2008, after working for many months with an informal Google Group whose initial focus was centred on Virtual Learning Environments (NSCC Second Life), we resurrected the Ed Tech Cafe idea and created a highly informal series of online sessions called "Virtual Water Cooler" (VWC) using the college's Elluminate Server to deliver and facilitate the discussions. As one of the founding members I lead and contributed regularly to the steering committee to create a schedule, logistics, promotional materials, and invitations to launch the first set of VWC sessions in the late Fall of 2008. I facilitated two sessions during the early series and attended most all of the sessions. I also developed the SharePoint site launched to support the VWC sessions.
